How to Fish: Fishing Rod Controls & No-Bite Checks
After switching to the Fishing Rod on Island 2, check that you are retrieving the hook: with default mouse controls, hold left-click while it is in the water. Community replies distinguish this from rapidly clicking after a catch to reel it in. This control check can resolve a missed input; it is not a confirmed fix for every no-bite bug.

Check the Fishing Rod input first
- Confirm the rod and active bait. Buying an item does not confirm which rod or bait you currently have equipped.
- Cast the hook into the water. Watch where the hook lands before diagnosing a failed bite.
- Hold the retrieval input. Two separate Steam discussions advise holding left-click while the hook is in the water with the later fishing rod.
- Reel after a catch. The August 22 reply recommends repeated left-clicks to reel faster after hooking a creature. If you changed controls or use a gamepad, check the equivalent action in your current control settings.
Compare the original “cant catch anything” discussion (August 22) and “Fishing Glitch” discussion (August 25, later replies through September 9). They support the input distinction, not a guaranteed wait time or catch chance.
Separate three different fishing problems

Already holding the input and still getting no bites?
The August 25 poster explicitly said they already knew the hold-to-retrieve control, and a September 5 reply reported the same unresolved symptom. That is why this page does not call the input a universal bug fix.
Record whether the problem follows a particular rod, bait, player or session. If a friend can catch with an equivalent setup while you cannot, include that comparison in a bug report rather than concluding that the lure never works. For joining or version errors, continue to the multiplayer checks.
Do not deliberately die, discard quest items, or delete your save based on a single workaround reply. No game-specific recovery method with a reliable success rate was established by the sources checked here.
